  • WTB budget/incomplete Standard in FL or GA

I recently picked up a fairing, bags, trunk and rack from what I think was a '78 standard. Now that I have these parts, I'd like to put them on an XS11 standard. Projects are OK. Bad transmissions are not. May take one w/o a title since FL law changed this year. I do not want a special.

My budget is limited, so shipping even an affordable one from the Midwest or Washington State is out. I have a trailer and would like to find one from central FL to central GA if there is one to be had. Please reply here or PM me.

I'm not in a hurry. Thanks.

What does the change entail, as far as bikes with no title?
Can they still be registered, or sold out of state?

It allows for "bonded" titles. As I understand the process, you put up a fee- perhaps the book value of the bike, and it is held for three years. After three years, if no claims are made, the state issues a title.

While looking for info on that, I found this ADV Rider thread where they talk about going through Vermont. Seems to work for all that have tried it, and the last post was just a few days ago.

Florida has been sticking it to us on fees since 2009. There is a $225 new tag fee, but thankfully it doesn't apply to bikes... yet.

I got a real good price on the parts, and am looking to do the same on the bike.

81 H Series with clear title in hand

I think I have just what you need. I have an 81H series frame. motor and most all the goodies that go along with it. It looks like you have all the exterior cosmetics. Feel free to give me a call if you're interested. I live in Springfield, IL. 2176221930.

I have a 79SF with 8800 original miles and love it. Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the offer, but I won't waste your time. Even if you gave it away (and I've read through your cylinder head problem posts, so I'm sure you won't), I'm looking at over $400 to ship it here from Illinois, actually more since haulers always charge more for inoperable bikes.

Having done a couple of project bikes, I find it is better to start with a local one, otherwise I'm spending money I need just to move the bike.

                heads are still available

Well okay, but if you're making it a project, couldn't you get another head and carbs. The rest of the bike is fine as well as the the parts removed from it. I have two complete motors and four heads. The seat and valves can be changed and machined to specs.

You mentioned you found a deal on the exterior cosmetics and thought I would offer up some parts for your project.

FYI, I found a 79 SF model with 8700 original miles. Therefore have many very clean parts for the H series that were purchased for the project over the past four years.

I spent this time cleaning and replacing lots of the chrome components needed and will be parting these out as well.

The engine ran fine on the bike. When I bought the 79, I pulled the carbs and installed them on the 81 H. It ran fine and idled just as good as the 79. I confirmed the bike ran as designed and listed the Mikuni RS carbs and sold them in three days. I then stripped the H series.

I road an 80 model late in 80 and thus the reasoning for the XS100 project. I now have a bike I toyed on in my early days and ENJOY IT. It really runs and rides like a new one.

The H series bike is down to the frame and will be easy to inspect any and all parts.

                Photos available upon request.

As for the cylinder head problems. If there were more honest prople one could trust out there, I might not have had to purchase an extra two heads and go through the BS of having to pull all the valves to change seals. Then reinstall them only to find too much seat and valve wear and no way to adjust the valves. Or buy a good one off a so called respectable eBay seller and get a head with six bent valves.

On another note, what does the head issues have to do with a good frame and clear title for a project anyway?

There are a lot of unknowns here, and I like to work out the cost of anything before getting involved.

I'll use a benchmark of $1,200 for a complete and running bike in average condition within driving distance. At some point it will need tires, perhaps a seat cover, and some maintenance work, but is usable as-is. My operable GS1000G models were $900 and $850 each as of 2010 and 2011.

If I buy a local "project" complete non-running bike as I have in the past, I'd expect to spend no more than $400. Right away, I'll have to likely change oil & filter (would do this to the above as well, so no added cost), clean the carbs (up to $100 for seals), find some odds and ends missing parts like side covers ($50), add a battery ($75) and any number of other things. I'm at $625 or likely higher depending on what is needed. I don't add in any labor or painting work since I do this myself.

If I have to buy expensive stuff like another head (complete), this is $175, and carbs are also about $175, so another $350 for a running total of $975.

If I start with a frame & title, I'd expect to pay no more than $200. Then of course there is the added time & expense of finding all the big (engine & wheels) and little (bolts & brackets) stuff. I won't go line-item, but while the above example shows the economic viability of this idea to a degree, it goes away when shipping large items.

Add in $400 shipping to the $625 figure above and best-case I'm at $1,025, or $500 for an inoperable one and I'm at $1,125, which is $75 less than the operable one. Worst-case and I'm at $1,375 to $1,475.

This is why I'm looking for a relatively local bike. My ST1100 came from North Florida and the Sabre from Southern Alabama, I picked up both on my trailer.

I have something you might be interested in.

Im in Central Florida. I have a 78 xs1100 that I bought as a project but since I have been unemployed I cant put any time or money into it.
                      It is titled.
Just under 11k miles on all original motor.
What I know about it: it ran when I bought it. I haven't cranked it up in a looong time (6 months +), so goes without saying the carbs need to be cleaned.
Needs tires (not cracked but rear is worn).
                      One fork seal is wet.
No body damage or signs of PO dropping it.
Mac exhaust (I think. see photo).
It has pods on, but I bought an airbox to replace them.
My initial experience with testing it had the clutch out of adjustment pretty bad. I pulled the clutch plates out and inspected them but no warping or bluing and the friction plates are all in spec. I haven't been able to get back to the project to adjust clutch (which I haven't done before).
I suspect the springs need to be replaced but they are in spec too.
The front brake res is showing its age. I bought a used one. The tail light is some catalog tombstone style. I bought a stock used one.
One side cover missing (left side).
All of these extra parts would come with the bike if you decided you want to strike a deal.

My intention was to bring it back to stock, but I ran out of job. Now it's just in my way.
