  • Looking for an XJ OIl Pan

My oil pan has the drain plug holes stripped, its running by way of a longer bolt but it doesn't seal right. I looked on ebay and the pictures make it look like the XJ pan is unique to the XJ. There are 2 out there, 1 is the seller that tried to shank me on XJ mufflers, the other seller basically states he refuses to check anything but the drain plug head is good (mine was too till I tried to remove it and the threads peeled out). Anyway no hurry its running just a future repair
    Thanks
    John

If you can get by without the XJ running for a while, next oil change, take the pan off and take it to a machine shop that deals with metric stuff. Some auto repair shop might also be a place to check. The ones that deal with older foreign cars.
Tell the nice man you want a Timesert installed, to match the thread on the drain plug. Shouldnt cost too much, and provides a steel thread. If it is the same size as the spark plug thread, that makes it all the more likely that they will have the right insert, and tools for installation. CZ

Only difference between the XJ can and the XS pan is the out level sensor hole.

I would think you might be able to just get an oil drain bolt off a US car, (SI threads) next size up from the metric, then tap the pan to match it. JAT, not something I have done.

You can just go to an auto parts store and get an oil drain plug repair kit.I know they used to sell them, probably still do. Then just tap for a timesert or whatever insert you get. Then install the insert and flush out the oil. You should be able to get most of the chips out by flushing and the rest should be caught in the oil filter.Wa-La...fixed. And fixed better than new.

Having just gone through this very thing (stripped XJ pan), I'd recommend just getting another pan. Because of the design of the pan/hole, any sort of insert will partially block the hole and you won't get all the oil out. Using a self-tapping drain bolt works rather poorly in aluminum IMO (that had been tried in mine, it partially stripped again and still leaked), so bite the bullet and get another pan. Andreas (look in the 'parts for sale' forum) has at least one XJ pan in stock I believe, send him a PM. He guarantees his parts...

Still looking for a pan. I solved 1 problem my hard fiber washer was leaking slightly and I've replaced it with a crush washer. There is probably a good inch plus of threads in the pan and the plug was like .625 and stripped the threads out of the casting. I bought a longer bolt and and am relying on the threads farther back but admit I'm running on borrowed time. I'd consider pulling the pan and installing a Heli Coil but considering I don't already have the 14mm set the starter kit will run 40.00 can probably get another pan for less and I don't see a big need for 14mm helicoil in my future although I think that's a common spark plug size.. I have some of the smaller sizes on hand. Dunno not a crisis yet so I can poke around for now. I would not attempt a thread repair on the bike unless I had an extra 5 gallon bucket of oil I could flush the pan out with. I have done similar repairs on a tractor and used a running vacuum cleaner hose on the block while drilling slow and tapping. Not ideal but in a pinch it will do. You could do that and open the fill hole so that the air could enter the top and exit into the vacuum.................
