Looking for a luggage rack for a 79 Special. Backrest is a plus.
Wife is paranoid about sliding off the back.

your special should have a passenger grab bar. the 79 specials had the best passenger grab bar of all the 1100s.
check out the picture on the cover of the clymer manual, or here in the info threads.

I have a luggage rack and backrest that's been sitting in the garage for a while. I'll see if it'll bolt right up to the Special. I'll see about getting pics tonight.

Okay, so I know that one will fit onto an '80 SG. Some rust underneath the luggage rack. Here are a couple pics; I have more detailed ones I can email or PM, if you're interested. Just let me know.
The other one seems to be missing the pieces where they connect to the shock mount and slide into the mount. I don't know if it'd work or not. I honestly couldn't tell you what kind it is, or anything like that. But in any case, here's what that one looks like. Or if anyone can help me ID that second one, it'd sure be appreciated...

I'm thinking the bad news is that the rack for the 79 Special is a rare bird as it only fits that year of the Special.
Can someone confirm if that is correct?
I have the stock grab bar but it would be nice if the wife could lean back against the back rest and not on me 100% of the time.

Bet U could make either work and still look good..............yup, the 79Special was kinda of a 'one-off' in alot of respect to fittment of several components from the other 4yr. models. The Venturer, even tho a Standard falls in the same catagory from middle of bike rearward.
81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.
If you put the grab bar on a shelf in the garage, you'll have a lot more ways to fit a rack to your bike. You can fab brackets with steel from Home Depot with a drill, a vise & a BFH.

Thanks TV, got your PM and giving it some serious consideration. Would look good on the 20K mile Special. I'll see what the wife thinks, she's the one who needs it.
