              They look the same and fit the same but they are set up with different starting advance and all that crap.

              So NO they are not the same.

                Nate is right. Each years mechanical advance is slightly different. They each have slightly different curves and limits and the starting points are because of this different with 78 IIRC having the most static advance. The 80 advance also comes in pretty fast as well IIRC having a bit more than both 78 and 79 because of the slightly lower compression of the later engines, but the more aggressive advance curve of both the centrifugal and vacuum advance units of the 80 units is also a cause of the 80 motors 3500 RPM knock, which is actually a type of ping that Yamaha CLAIMS to be harmless.
