I think the mounting bracket and such for the 80 and earlier were for the square shaped solenoid. But wiring wise it should work no problem.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

You can take them apart and rebuild them. I just did mine. Took an hour or so. The round ones are harder than the square ones, but still doable. No new parts required.1980 XS850SG - Sold
