I was watching that too.
thats what happens when you get carried away bidding... the seat wasnt even that nice and it was just two guys fighting for it... I could get alot of custom seats for that kind of money... The cafe seat for my other xs isnt even that much , new and with a pad..
One thing you need to understand is the seats on these are famous for rusting away, so finding a good, solid seat pan isn't always all that easy. Add in the fact that no one is reproducing the molded foam base here, and that explains why seats that don't look all that good can go for big money. Replacement covers are easy to find, it's finding something decent to put them on that's hard...
You can get a brand-new '78-79 standard seat; it's from England, and will run you about $300 by the time you pay shipping, and won't come with the side trim, tail cone, or grab bar. Look here for more info...http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...highlight=seat You might have to contact the poster to get current seller info.
Also keep in mind that you can't swap seats around willy-nilly on these. The '78-79 'standard' seats only fit those years/models unless you either relocate the TCI or mod the seat pan/foam. You'll also have issues with seat fit at the tank if you try to use a Special seat with a standard fuel tank or vice-versa. Seat fitment (not including differences in cover pattern/pad shape, only if the seat pan will actually fit) is this:
'78-79 standard will interchange, won't fit any other model without noted mods.
'79 Special, one year/model only. Can be made to fit '80-81 standard if using a special fuel tank or if you trim the front of the pan.
'80-81 Special will interchange. Won't fit any other model without mods, and will leave open gap at the rear where the Special taillight goes.
'80 standard. Another one year/model only. Will fit '81, but slightly different shape at rear. Will fit '79 Special if you trim the front of the pan.
'81 standard. Again, one year/model. Very similar to '80 standard, but only came as King/Queen touring type, and can be fitted to '80 standard, and the '79 Special if trimmed.
I'll note that the seat in the pic you posted is a later 'euro-only' seat and was never sold here. The '78-79 standard (here) was sold up until (I believe) '82 in europe and got styling changes we never saw.
I have a seat and cowl for a 78 E. Cowl is Macho Maroon. I won't be able to get pics until I get back to the states on Thursday. Should fit the 79 but you will have to repaint the rear cowling.
This seat is in bad condition. The pan is rusted out but with some fiberglass it can be made usable. It will also need to be recovered. It's a 78/79 standard seat.
P.M. me if you are inerested.
