I'm looking for a carb syncing kit and hoping to find one for significantly less than the $100 sets on ebay... if that's possible. I've done very little with carbs yet so I'm not sure what's out there. If anyone has or knows of a cheap but reliable set, let me know, thanks!

You can make one at home for really cheap, but for my shop, neatness and portability are king. I LOVE the Morgan Carbtune. $98 for the Carbtune and the case, but WELL worth it IMO.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Fully Vetterized and Dynojet Kit added, Heated Grips, Truck-Lite LED headlight, Accel Coils, Irridium plugs, TKAT Fork Brace, XS850LH Final Drive & Black SS Brake lines from Chacal.
Here's my web page devoted to my bike! XS/XJ User's Manuals there, and the XJ1100 Service Manual and both XS1100 Service manuals (free download!).

I agree with cbug. The carbtune is easy and pretty fool proof. Its pretty much the easiest to use. So if your looking to get something that is easy to use even for newbies get that one. If your looking for something that takes a bit more work to use each time you need to use it then you can for sure make something for cheap that works great, but there is more user input and if you dont get it calibrated right then your not going to get good results from it.Nathan

Most everyone will recommend the Carbtune, however, you said cheap but reliable. I have less than $10 in my set-up.
I bought a couple of vacuum gauges off E-bay, a couple of plastic fuel shut-offs from the local mower shop, and about 2 feet of line to connect it all. Since you are only essentially synching two carbs at a time, this works out great.
I cut the line into two equal lengths, cut about 6 inches off each piece, and installed the fuel shut-offs. The shut-offs are used to equalize the vacuum going to the gauges and stop the needle from bouncing. Also, there is no mercury to be sucked into your carbs.
It's worked great for me, and it's cheap.
YMMV

I built the plenum Scooby referenced. But I can not find a valve like that that works for crap. Soooo...I hook my Mityvac to one end of the plenum and use a single hose ont he other end and just move it carb to carb. Check, adjust, check again, adjust again. Takes about twenty minutes to go through all four carbs and get them all synched up. And I have a multi-use tool in the Mityvac.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Solution!
Thanks guys! I think I may try the single-carb method on my own, but I ended up finding out a friend knows a motorcycle mechanic who specialized in carbs so he's doing the cleaning and the syncing for diiiiiirt cheap. 50 bucks if anyone lives near Indianapolis and needs carb work. I'll let you all know how they turn out if you're wondering (as to whether he's good).1979 XS 1100F
