  • I need a Speedo cable - STAT!

I was riding home last night, and my speedo suddenly stopped working! I disconnected the cable, and it came out of the housing in 2 pieces!

Does anyone have a used speedo cable they can spare? I'd go buy a new one, but I'm heading to the Bon Jones gathering next weekend, and I'm hoping I might be able to snag a new one there for cheap. I just don't want to ride across the state next Saturday without knowing my mileage. TIA!

Got a GPS? After my speedo died last year I've been using my GPS for a speedo all the time. If you think your picking up a cable, then a gps would be an excellent stand in for the trip.

Well, I found a brand new one on ebay for $20.86 shipped, so I just went with that. I just didn't want to have to pay the $50+ that Bikebandit wanted.

sorry I dint find this thread sooner. I have a decent used one I would just give to you.

But at least you helped make some guys mortgage by paying full retail for one on ebay

I bought a new one from Mikes XS and it was the exact same one as stock. I don't remember the price but it was very reasonable...

I considered $20 to be more than reasonable for a brand new cable. Definitely less than "full retail". I just hope they ship fast enough to get it here before the end of the week.

If its just the core and not the housing, they can be bought at Autozone or any other national parts supply house for about $10. Cut to lenght and swage the new end on, put grease on the first half and slide it in the housing. Pretty easy.

                Its what I did anyway...

                  Hey Bug,

The cable for the '81 MNS is different (not sure about the '80 tho). Did you get the right one? I have both kinds of drive units and I believe they will allow you to use either one.

4 pods - Air box gutted--E3 Plugs - High Back seat - Grooved out swing arm - SS brake lines
Fork brace - 160 speedo - Auto CCT

My housing was kinked from the PO, and that, I believe, is why the cable itself broke. I had tried in the past to remove the cable, but because of the kink, I couldn't. I needed the whole thing anyway...

Different? How so? Now that I look at the part numbers, I do see that the prefix on the LH one (4W1-83550-00-00) is different from the cable for the SG (10M-83550-00-00). The diagrams make it look like the parts are exactly the same. Unfortunately, I can't find a picture of the LH one to compare.

From what I can tell, that top picture is the same cable as ALL Specials (including the MNS), and the XJ use. The bottom one is for ALL Standards. I still don't understand why the MNS part number is different from the other Specials and the XJ.

I just got the one I ordered today (now that's quick shipping!), and it installed perfectly in 5 minutes. Now I know how fast I'm going, and my turn signals will cancel again.

                          Can't

Say as to (if any) others use this cable but I know there are the different ones. It may be in length that is the other difference.
