  • Stuff I dream about

well, I can't put that here.
But I can ask if anyone has a lead on:
-the rubber grommets for the turn signal stems to frame attachment. I need 2.

-left side cover (can trade a left '79 Special)

-rear forward plastic fender, or the forward rear plastic fender- whichever you prefer, I need 1

-I too have need of a drive boot, black 1 ea. with accordian style pleats that allow flexion of unit as it attaches at the gear box housing and extends to the shaft which also attaches with spring clips which get rusty and please tell me I can repair mine if do not find one.
Please tell me I can repair mine if do not find one. Plasti-dip?
    Got new pics coming,

Hey, D, if the rubber is in good shape you can repair the boot. Get a heavy needle and some heavy black thread, then stitch it up just like Frank N. Stein. Use a piece of wood or plastic to push the needle through the rubber or you'll be repairing your fingertips, too.

A little black RTV or plastic dip/spray rubbed into the threads and a light film spread on the inside of the boot will keep the water out and help keep the thread from drying and cracking.

I rubbed my finger along the repair to clean it a little bit so it shows up better in a picture but here's my repaired u-joint cover after a year in service:

    Regards,

      Hey Scott,

Yep, it does look like Frank, but I think the rubber is good enough to try it, thanks. With all the small stuff I am having to buy for the refurb, saving a little here and there right now is making sense.

Now, I need to find a body shop around Tulsa that will take the dents out of my gas tank. Not sure who to try next as the last guy kept it for over 3 weeks and never even started on it!

Also, need a headlamp bezel assmbly and will trade that side cover still.

Yes, I got tired of the nickel and dime scene, too. I ripped the cover while I was removing the engine to fix the starter clutch. It was almost brand new but it got pinched between the frame and the mid-drive flange. At the time it was ~$50 for a new one from the Yamahahahaha-say-what?! parts department and I didn't feel like waiting to ride the bike so I stitched it up one evening while watching TV and surfing the 'net. The repair isn't really visible and anyone looking that intently at my u-joint cover had better be someone really close to me anyway!

Good luck getting the tank fixed. I could buy a couple of bikes for what the shops around here want just for paint with no repair work.
