  • Kick Start parts WANTED

I've got an '80 XS11 Midnight Special, and I'd like to add a kick starter to it. I could get the xs850 lever off EBay, but I still need the shaft/gear/spring part from an older bike. Please send me an email at mepoland__AT__gmail.com. Thanks,

    Great Idea!

I've been thinking about doing that to My '80 Special also but have no idea how to do it, what it takes, or... anything of the nature. Could you send me a message with a list of things I'll need and maybe a step by step "how to". I know I'm actually asking alot so if you at least know of some links that could help. ayway. thanxs Z

      check ebay

There was an assemblage of parts on ebay last night that were available. From what I believe, this is a split the cases type job, are you up for that?

I think I saw the same EBay parts, $70 though:

songs4sale, from what I've gathered on threads here you'll need a lever (either folding from an xs850 or the stock "emergency" removable one from a '78e bike) as well as the shaft assembly from a '78e. The shaft has a gear, spring, and various c-clips and stuff on it. There's also an oil seal that replaces your current plug where the shaft will come out of the tranny side cover. A couple people claim they've installed the kick starter without breaking the transmission cases, but it's not clear whether or not it's really possible. I've got my motor sitting on the floor of the basement right now so I don't really care whether I've got to split the cases or not. A quick search for "kick starter" will give you the source of all that info. Good luck,

          Got it

Nevermind, found a kicker shaft and pivot arm for about 40 all together on ebay.

Might want to document the process and post it as a tutorial for others who may want to do the same thing. Take lots of pictures, and take notes for each step.

              kick start

I am still a beginner but brought two sets of kick starters for my two 1980's. I put in gear shaft with spring in clutch side (kicked and nothing)and found out there is another gear in the tranny missing so I left it alone.

Yep, that's why its a "split-the-cases" job. You can't get that extra gear in there without doing that.
