  • Carbs, exhaust, intake boots, engine covers

I need a good set of carbs, complete if possible. I also need the intake boots between the carbs and the head. I also need to get a header. I need either a good stock or aftermarket dual 2-1 headers for dual cans.

As for engine covers, I need a nice timing cover and flywheel cover.

Im sure I need more stuff, Ill add as I remember.

    Model and year?

Hey Freeze. Were you looking for early or late model carbs? Do the boots need to be pretty or just functional? Thx Rick

I need carbs to fit an 81 engine I think. I need to rejet regardless though for altitude and mods, so as long as they fit and have all the parts there and functional I should be OK. The boots need to be functional. I found a pretty cheap source for new ones(well, cheaper than they were for my FZR, a LOT cheaper) and will get them eventually, but need something functional to get it running now. So no major cracking, but small cracks are ok if they dont go all the way through(if the price is right).

        Early vs. Late model carbs

Depending on how much modifying you do, the early model carbs (78-79 brass floats) seem the way most guys go because they have adjustable main needles. I had a set on my 80 Special and they worked well with 1196 big bore kit and ported and flowed head. I switched over to the later model carbs (80-81 plastic floats) when I installed a 4 into 1 header and Megacycle cams because, I needed a Dyno Jet kit and they are no longer made for the early model carbs.
I have the early carb set here, but if you are planning to go for a full out performance engine build, I would get the later model set and put a Dyna Jet kit in it rather than have to buy a set later.

I dont plan on going too crazy with mods on this bike. Its pretty powerful as is, and its just meant to be my highway cruiser. I like the adjustable needle idea, but the jet kit should address that right? The carbs will need rejetting just for the altitude, but I plan on running pod filters, Im not sure on the exhaust yet. I will probably run a stock header for now until I can find a Mac 4-2 since it seems to be the highest clearance header. But even with exhaust and pods, stage 1 is usually all thats required at this elevation unless other major mods have been done. I want to start with a good stock set first and play with the jetting from there. I can get everything pretty close with new jets, but the adj needles start getting pretty pricey and harder to get on their own, if they are even necessary. I havent seen these carbs yet, but I am betting I could get away with a washer under the needle, but if its needs any more adj than that, well... I just dont seem to get my moneys worth out of complete jet kits, buying the parts I need individually works out cheaper for me it seems when tuning carbs.
