Looking for a sidecar For my XS11
1978 XS1100
When a man talks dirty to a woman, it's sexual harassment. When a woman talks dirty to a man, it's $3.95 a minute.
People are more violently opposed to fur than leather because its safer to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs.
Bikes don't leak oil, they mark their territory.

Sidecar
I would be interested in a sidecar myself. Out of 5 bikes i should be able to make one a sidecar rig. Then Fredintoon won't be so lonely on here. I don't need anything fancy or pretty. Will need brackets for bike or pictures to be able to make them. Maybe if we get enough sidecar bikes we can have a XS/XJ Sidecar Rally. Thanks Tom

Brent has a sidecar though I have not seen it on the XS.
If you fancy a sidecar have a sidecar.

I got hooked on having my dog for company years ago. This poodle was just the right size for the middle of the gear bag. We attended Camp XS in Gillette on this bike in ~'98:

I picked up a cheap velorex on ebay and fell in love with hacking. So did my dogs, I've now got three Springers and all will immediately jump in the hack when the garage door opens. I eventually fabricated a sliding canopy for the sidecar which worked well, in addition I upgraded the axle size and mounted a goldwing comstar wheel. IMHO a velorex is just too light for an XS11 without a much heavier suspension and plenty of ballast:

My current rig is a steel bodied Chang Jiang which is perfectly suited to the XS11. I modified the axle to fit an XS11 Front wheel and used my previous fiberglass velorex molds to cobble together a canopy tho' in the summer I just mount a small windshield.

Sidecars are great tho' before investing the time and $$$ in one I'd recommend test riding one a bit. There's a saying I've heard that you'll either love it or hate it with no in between. It's nice being able to easily navigate off the pavement tho' this road was a bit extreme:

Plan on a lot of time playing with the alignment to get it to handle the way you want it to. Stock steering on an XS11 hack is heavy and you get tired quickly, especially with cross-winds. Leading link forks are expensive and the steerite triple tree mod I've got is a bit less so. A cheaper way is to mix and match fork parts from specials and standards, Fred has good info on this. Also important is to have robust mounts!!! Preferably a good subframe since you don't want this to happen:

I attribute the frame breakage to the velorex clamp style mounts. If you decide to proceed I can take some pics of my mounts (the ones that actually worked) and I may even still have templates for the parts I made.

great idea! XS11 is an ideal sidecar tug, it's got power to spare and a sturdy steel frame to bolt the sidecar onto.
First, sign up with this sidecar site:-
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/SCT/
The site's founder is Claude Stanley who builds and installs sidecars.
Claude's business premises are practically next door to you (at least, compared to my hometown of Saskatoon they are)
I'd suggest you look for a used Ural or Dneipr sidecar.
Tough as old boots, those sidecars, and your dog won't care that they ain't svelte or streamlined.
Certainly my buddy's airedale loves to ride in his XS650/Dneipr rig
Hope to see you on the SCT site.Last edited by fredintoon; 10-10-2009, 02:04 PM.Fred Hill, S'toon

didja sign up with SCT &/or contact Claude yet?
Claude's business has it's own site too:-
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/...rsandTrailers/
Alas that according to Mapquest it's a 14 hour drive from where you are.
But the site has photos that show some details of sidecar attachments that may be of help.
Also the SCT site photo album "Fred's racks" shows my own attempts at sidecar mounting.Fred Hill, S'toon
