  • Throttle Cable Needed

I am looking for a Throttle Cable. I have a 79 Standard. Thanks.

Are these cheap enough new that I should go that way? IF so, where do you recommend? Thanks.

Plenty of used ones out there, probably between $20-$40, depending on the seller. You might try member andreashweiss. He's our in-house parts depot.

Buy a new one. Your local bike shop will have them. Their @ $30 new here at mine, but the XJ's is a bit different than the XS.

Wow! You must have a nice local shop! Mine wanted $75 for a new throttle cable, and the junk yard wanted $25 for a used one.

I've repaired and replace my own throttle cables many times. I buy parts from the Flanders Company; see Products / Cable Making Parts. http://www.flandersco.com/

It's not hard, but it takes a little practice. The cable lengths are VERY important, because you only have about a 1/4" of adjustment range. I've had to resolder many times before I got it right. It's a good skill to learn.

Here's one trick I've used for barrel ends. Go to the local hardware store and buy a small brass rod the diameter of the throttle grip guide slots or the carburator slots. If it's a little bigger, you can use a file or ginder to make it fit. Drill a hole in the rod the size of your cable using a drill press. And then make a counter sink hole using a larger drill bit. You then insert the wire and unravel the end so it lays in the counter sink hole. When you solder the cable end, the solder gets in to the brisols of the cable and it will never pull out.

This site has some good reference info http://www.dansmc.com/cables.htm.

          Ride safe.

I only looked at one place, but Speedandsportinc.com has them for $39.29. Just go to their parts store and paste in this part number... 2H7-26311-01-00

Look around and I'm sure you can find it cheaper.
