  • 78' Float (brass)

So... Been messing around w/ this stupid carb, bought new rebuild kit for all 4. Still had gas for some reason leaking out of one carb. Pulled apart made sure float wasn't sticking. Well... 2 hours later... come to find out. there's a pin hole in the float in the #2 carb float and was half full with fuel. I'm wondering if anyone has one or 2 spare ones lyin around I could buy.

    Thanks.

You can replace them with the plastic floats from MikesXS. Much more durable that way.

Do some searching and I am sure you cand find some ideas on how to patch the hole, solder it up, things like that. It is not that simple due to the heat and sealed hole, but I know I have read a method or two on here about it.

I'd like to patch it. But I'll be honest. I got a little P/O'd @ the float. I attempted to repair it. since it was only a pin hole. appeared it was going to hold. Ended up being what I could find. 4 holes in it (awesome) I got mad and took a BFH (Big F'in Hammer) to it.

        I'll check out MikesXS

Is this the part I'm looking for?

Plastic Carb Float - Fits: 1980-84 XS650 Stock 34mm. Mikuni CV Carbs.
Also replaces Brass float used on early 1980 650 "Specials".
          OEM Ref.# 3H5-14985-00

n/m found it. Searched for the part # and found it. Searching for "Plastic Float" didn't reveal yes or no.

            floats from Mike's question

Did you replace all 4 with plastic or just one? I did a heat test (dip in boiling water) and one apparently has a pin hole near the top. No fuel was in it so I am wondering if it is necessary to replace. I had a leak out of one or more carbs back into the airbox and it is either a misadjusted float or float leak.

Just wondering if I should order one from Mikes or not.

I had replaced all 4. But in all honesty. I had such a negative experience with them.. I ended up pulling them out. and found a parts bike and took a brass float out of it.

Since the one float show a small spot under hot water that should be on top of the fuel level, I think I shall be OK. There wasn't any liquid inside when I shook it. I need to get some carb parts like at least one starter jet. It was a bitch to get out and the top is now scratched.

Also, when blowing hard through the fuel line, one of the float jets seems to let some air by. But that is when I blow hard. With a regular air stream, it seems to hold. I guess I won't really know till I put it back on the bike to see if fuel streams out one of them like it did when I started it yesterday.

I have aftermarket pipes on it so it is jetted for 145 on all mains. I think it is a set of carbs off of a f model based on the looks and not a g. Trying to decide if I should go ahead and by 4 sets and just rebuild it completely. The other jets look fine though but could use a cleaning.

I had a crushed float in my SF and found a replacement at the local Yami dealer. Not cheap ($32.00) but it is a replacement.
