  • Oil filter parts

So I finally got around to changing the filter and oil today.
Removed the header for easier access.

The filter bolt was so tight it rounded off. I used a extractor head to get it loosened out, and it tightened back up most of the way. I used visegrips to tighten it the rest of the way. So the next time I change oil I'll need the bolt/tube.

Also, there was no washer in the oil pan, just a spring. so if anyone has one of them extra laying around Id like to have it also. (i know we discussed this earlier in a thread)

If anyone has either used please send me a PM with a price.

When I recently changed my filter I found the same situation. In fact, the spring was inside the filter due to no washer.

I found a local MC shop that had a 1mm thick washer that was the right OD and abit smaller ID. Dremmel to the rescue! I ground the ID to the right diameter, and Bob's your uncle...I was back in bizness!

      This is how mine is.

So the way its supposed to work is that the filter sits on top of the washer, and the washer is on top of the spring right?

        Washer

        Hey Andy,
I experienced the same situation with the missing washer. I found a suitable substitute at my local Ace Hdwr store. But don't look in the washers section, look in the electric motor bushing drawer. Ask one of the attendants there, they should be able to help.

          Andy,

Partsnmore.com has those filter bolts for $9, but you need a $35 minimum order.

TC is TopCatGr. He makes some spin on oil filter adapters. Commonly known as a SOFA. I think they are about $45, but material prices have skyrocketed lately, so it may be a tad more.

I just changed the oil on my recent purchase (79 XS) and found that the spring and washer were missing. I guess the PO either lost it or it was gone long before they got it. Is it possible that the filter could move on the bolt and starve the engine of oil?

Probably won't starve the engine, but there's a strong possibility of the oil going un filtered. While there's a screen on the pickup tube for the pump to stop large chunks, if you have any smaller pieces, that can make it past the screen and pump gears, they will probably end up embedded in a crank bearing or rod bearing, accelerating wear.

TopCatGr58 sells a spin on adapter that allows the use of a more modern and typical spin on fliter, which will do away with the spring and such. Also does away with a LOT of headache when changing the oil.

A new spring and washer is available from you Yamaha dealer for less than 5 bucks. I would get one in sooner than later. Of course TC's spin on is also available, your choice.

I got the washer from bikebandit, cant remember what it cost but it was cheap. Whats with all the PO's losing the washer? I have TC's adapter, just havent installed it yet.

Now that you have the spring and washer covered, here is how I fixed my bolt, which was in the same condition as yours.
I have a lathe, so I turned the remaining stump down to a size that I could thread the size of a 19mm nut. I screwed a 19mm nut on, (same size as the oil drain plug, so I only need one size wrench to change oil), and welded a rosette bead in the center. Gonna take a real Bozo to round that one off.
You don't need the threading, so you could file the stump down till the nut fit, and then weld. If you don't have access to a welder, put it on with JB Weld, let it set up, and drill a hole through one of the flats, and drive a roll pin in.
