  • '78-79 Standard parts wanted

I guess this is really the place to post this stuff.

I'm trying to restore my original-owner '78 and need a few bits.

A good, original-paint (Macho Maroon) tank (dented mine with my knee) would be nice, but I may be dreaming. I've got a good '79 tank, but wrong color...

Also a non-rusty pair of headlight ears.

If I fail to find a tank, then I would like a unbroken pair of '78-79 sidecovers (so I can keep mine if I ever do find a tank) and I'll do a total repaint. Andreas has the rest of the stuff I need.

Also would like to find a good '79 square headlight to get rid of my no-longer-servicable sealed beam. Preferably complete, but whatever...

And as trade bait, I have a near-mint Yamaha snowmobile suit (bought with the bike), perfect for those cold days. Size is 'ladies large' but should fit anybody 5' 9" to 5' 2". Only worn maybe a dozen times (fit my ex....). Could use a drycleaning. Black w/red & white trim, Yammy snowmobile emblem. Or buy it outright for $75. Pic upon request.

    Thanks!

    Hi,
I have what you want but i'm in Europe Belgium!
If you're interested PM me your email so I can send you pictures of the parts.
Can you describe the parts in "good english" because i'm not sure that I've all good understood.
The ears of the front light: I see what it is
The rear light is on the original XS 2h9 a ""big"" rectangle, on some XS1100 (5K7?, Midnight?) they are small rectangle. I have all the original parts and the support to fix it on the rear fender(?) only for 2H9

Also sorry for my bad english.

    Alex

      original tank and light

I was dreaming to for many many years until recently when some person was selling a tank(in original box) that he bought from a Yamaha dealer in michigan that had been in a barn for 30 years. You might want to check in your area with a good restoration painter because they can get color code(off side panel or rear section if you have in origanal macho maroon) and paint your tank and then put the origanal gold pinstripe on and fix dent in the process. The square headlight and many other parts I have seen on ebay, good luck restoring the old XS11,Morgzilla.

I have checked with a local guy that specializes in bike restoration repaints, but he wants $900 for the job. That includes re-doing all the painted items which he insists on due to possible fading issues with the original paint. Can't say I disagree with him on the fading, but that's waaay more money than I have available right now.

That's using the '79 Indigo blue tank I have. I pitched the original tank as it was mashed beyond repair.

Just out of curiousity, what did you have to give for the NOS tank? Just in case I have to adjust my choke factor...

          nos tank

I got a great deal on the nos tank, including shipping I paid $300.00, however the inside of the tank needs to be glass beeded or have the acid run through (cant find at yamaha dealers anymore) since the barn leaked on the box that the tank was in and the tank does not come with the chrome gas cap. It also needs a small top next to the whole where the gas goes painted, there is a very small spot where the water rusted next to the whole. It will cost aprox $200-300 dollors to have the paint mixed up, they do not just make a small amount, however I can use to repaint side panels and fairing. So afterall I will have spent $600.00 vs $2000 which a local(chopper shop) wanted to paint the whole bike. It is still nice to have an original tank to put on, and have my old one as a spare to fix up at a later date. I wont get a chance to finish the tank until later in the year, you know how money is these days. Good luck whatever you do and dont forget to check ebay for the extra parts you need.Morgan.

            Cleaning rusty tanks

That was a deal on the tank....

And here's a trick I picked up on another bike forum for cleaning tanks on the cheap.

Get 'The Works' toilet bowl cleaner from K-Mart (about $2 a bottle). Use two bottles for serious rust, one if light. Pour it in, fill with warm water. Let it sit (shake the tank every 15 minutes) for an hour. Flush out the tank with warm water several times, dry with a hair dryer, then fog with WD-40. You will now has nice shiney bare metal.

I haven't personally tried this yet, but the guy that posted it said it works great.

              cleaning tank

Thanks for the tank cleaning tip, however I have been looking for an origanal 1978 macho maroon tank for several years(as you all know) so I am scared(I normally do not say that) 6'1 324lbs but I do not want to take a chance ruining my new tank. If anyone else has tried this cleaning meathod please let me know, or if anyone knows who still sells the yamaha acid cleaning kits let me know, thanks Morgan(morgzilla).
