I hate to say it, but pretty much, yes, pissing in the wind. There are 2 round-about ways to do it, but the bike didn't officially come with on. First is get Canadian gauges. As a Canadian that had to replace his, it ain't gonna happen. Second is to swap the guts with an older XS and cut a slit in the side for the XS trip reset.

Unless you want to go completely aftermarket, then there are choices.

triple clean and boots
-1982 XJ1100J - brought back from the dead by
replacing motor after throwing #4 rod
-1985 XJ750XN - shim job, oil change, ride. not bad for
$500 including new rear tire.
