    The elusive luggage rack

I'm starting to think I may need to match a luggage rack up from another model. The spacing between the mounts is about 6.5 inches. Has anyone done any homework on this?

I just ordered a Virago 700 luggage rack from Ebay. I'll see if it mounts up using the stock sissybar mount location. I have a Saddlemen sissybar bag and it sags down and covers the taillight, not good....Hopefully, the rack will work so the bag has something to rest on other than the taillight...Will repost once I get it mounted....may the force be with me!

I'll have to lok at my XJ again. It has a Honda rack with an adjustable (sliding) sissy bar. I put it on over 10 years ago, though, don't remember much detail. I picked it up at a motorcycle bone yard, think it was off a 650 Honda. I remember I had to do a little cutting on the bars that make up the bed of the rack to make it fit behind the seat. Popped off the plastic caps, shortened the bars a bit, popped the plastic caps back on and have been living with it that way since 2000. Looks good and has worked well.

What I can't remember is what I needed to do to make the mounting points work. I added a Vetter set-up about the same time, fairing and saddlebags, and may have used part of the luggage mount to secure the rack as well. Will look and get back to this thread. My recollection is that the rack was on first, then I modified it to work with the Vetter mount later.

Sissy bar has a pocket with the word Honda on it, but no one ever mentioned it being on a Yamaha.

Took a look at the Honda rack on the XJ last night. I must have installed it along with the Vetter bags and frames and modified the rack to fit. It is mounted to the Vetter hardware, will not work on a naked XJ.
