How are the standard trees different from the specials? I have several sets for the XS1100 specials that I'd happily sell, but noe off of Standards. What is the difference?
Standards have more rake to the trees than the specials do. Special trees are further out out top than they are at the bottom (looking from the side). The standard trees 'should' be equal top and bottom, or even have some positive rake (in degrees) to them. since the fork sliders are different on each model, the trees are different as well, so the trail remains the same. I believe there are several different threads that discuss this if you have time and feel like hunting. look for 'standard triple tree(s)' or something along those lines.

thanks! This site is darned educational. I have two extra Standard tanks that came with one of the parts bikes, so there is a chance that one of the tree sets is off of a standard. I"ll poke around more when I get to the garage later. Are there any casting numbers that can help confirm which trees I have?
My 80 special upper tree has 3h3 00 stamped on the bottom side...left side when you are looking at it upside down. If you want to get rid of one of the tanks + petcocks, I might be interested in them as well...depending on what condition they are in.
If they are standard trees, they will probably have 2h7 stamped under there.

OK, I blasted them with carb cleaner, and found casting on the underbelly of the top tree that says 2H700.
Actually, I'm glad to know this as I am in the midst of building a leading link front end for the sidecar rig, using stock trees, and the Special trees are going to be the ones I'll want to use. These Standard trees aren't what I need at all. Bearings are still on them and seem nice. If you want these trees, drop me an email at Motopsycho@wat.midco.net and we'll work out the details.
