Does anyone know if there's a speedometer for the '82 XJ that registers more than 85 mph? My needle spends too much "lazy" time resting against the little peg at the 85 mark. Any help will be appreciated.
There isn't a tock unit that will swap in directly. However, do a search on "XJ speedometer" and you should come across 2 methods of getting a 160 mph speedo.
First is to swap face plates and get speedo recalibrated. The XJ miles window is larger than the XS, so the window needs to be enlarged before the swap. Cost of calibration used to be in the $50.00 range plus shipping and cost of face plate. Can't find the thread right now, will look more tonight.
2nd method is to swap the guts of a 160 mph XS speedo into the XJ case. Maximan took this route with good results. More labor intensive, as the XJ case needs to be modified slightly for the trip odometer reset shaft, which is on the side of the XS speedo instead of the front as it is on the XJ. :ink to this thread is here: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...ht=speedometer
3rd option is to fit one of the new electronic speedometers generally used on bicycles. Don't know what the top end is, though.
