  • Valve shims needed

Winter project is underway again, and I'm looking for three shims: 265, 270, and 290. Will consider outright purchase, or will trade 1 for 1 and cover shipping costs both ways. I've got spares of 235, 240, 250, 260, and 275, 280.

Drop me a PM if you can help.

    Thanks.

If you know someone with access to a surface grinder you could reduce the thickness of two of the shims you already have, its only a two minute job.
Same applies if you can't get the 290 you need, you could get and grind down a bigger shim if the 290 is unavailable.

Most wear on my engine valve train has been on the valve seats resulting in the clearances closing up, in the 23 years owning the XS I've never had to buy a shim only grind down the original ones.

Most engineering workshops have a small surface grinder with a magnetic table, I always worked on Jones and Shipman 540s.

I've got a bunch of shims out in the shop. I'll take a look at what I've got later this morning. If I have what you need, We can trade one for one.

I have 265s and 290s but no 270s at this time. I also have two trashed engines that I'm going to dismantle for parts after Christmas I will check for 270 shims. I'll swap shims with you.

My stock pile of shim sizes.

Okay, I've finally got it sorted out. With my new metric feeler gauge set from KD tools, it turns out I only need a 290 shim.

Do Lee - are you still interested in a 1-1 swap for a 250 to fill in the gap in your stock? Drop me a pm with your miling address and I'll get your 250 on its way.

Thanks, Do'Lee. I sent off a 250 in the mail this morning, you'll be able to catch my adress from the envelope. I've also got a 290 coming from acof911 that it looks like I may need for a second spot.

I was checking it all again last night with my new feeler gauges that now let me measure clearance in 0.01mm steps all the way up from 0.04mm. I've got another spot that is just exactly at the limit of the specified range, but when you're working in 0.01 increments, it gets down to trying to differentiate how "tight" one measurement is compared to another. Ya, I know Prom is probably going to say I'm making way too much of this, but what the heck, there's way too much snow in the yard right now for me to be in a big hurry to get this thing buttoned up.

Speaking of snow, and hijacking my own thread, I finally broke down on the weekend and bought SWMBO a new snowblower to replace the one I bought new in 1979. Her new Husqvarna has 10.5 horses, power steering, a halogen headlight, 16" tires, and heated handgrips. Bring on the snow!
