Hi, I just had to share this one:
I'm repairing a '79SF and also own an '80LG (Midnight Special). For completely unrelated reasons I happened to buy an extra guage cluster from an '80LG off eBay so a friend at work could hook up the electronic tach to an audio mixing board as a VU meter (we're... creative) (and have some time on our hands)
The '79SF has had the front end completely dismantled and I am slowly rebuilding her after a front end collision which has made for some interesting dismantling (thank you dremmel tool...) The accident left the '79's upper tree bracket, guage cluster and guage bracket a lil' outta whack and I needed a replacement. So much for the tachometer/VU display. (I was hoping to use the throttle to adjust volume gain too...) (one day)
The bracket is a perfect fit, but unfortunately the housings for the indicators between the two models are different enough to make them not swappable. The indicator lights on the '80LG have L/R turn signals, the 'SF a single turn yellow indicator. Both have headlamp and oil pressure lights. Both have 6 pin connectors. I'm no electrician but I figured that I'd need to rewire and might be lucky enough to get one or both of the replacement '80LG lights to come on w/o blowing a fuse, but, to my delight, I found out that connecting the '80LG indicators to my '79SF wiring provided the discreet left or right indications in the '80's housing!
To boot now, whenever I finally get her back on the road, my '79SF will proudly announce (between her guages, a little more than two inches across) that she is a Midnight Special.
heh.
