Question about ‘80 Spcl engine guards

I’m looking to put engine guards on my 1980 1100 Special, will I need longer bolts or different brackets? Are the ones I see on ePay (left & right pair) Yamaha factory accessories. I’d also like to know the outside diameter of the tube. Thanks

You will need the longer bolt for the front lower engine mount on most of them. Bax picture shows the two point mount, and there are the three point mount as well. Make sure they come with mounting hardware if you can. The "shorter" bolts for the front mounts will work, but the long bolt on the bottom of the one in the picture is what you will need. I have one or two bolts here, but don't know the length needed for the different style guards.

My bolts all have the 8 on the head and only 1-2 thread past the top of the nut. On my 79 special, I believe the original bolts were used.

Apparently the guards came with a sticker on at least the right side one. Underside of the top bar I can make out "genuine" on what's left.

I bought a set for my new 80 MNS and as Ray stated they came with the longer bolt needed. Most sold on Ebay don't include those bolts. If you see a set for sale be sure to ask the seller if they have the bolts and are they included in the sale. If not you may have to source them.

While it is best to get a real “through bolt” for the engine mount, you can use all thread and buddy-nut each end. I have done that and to the best of my knowledge, I didn’t destroy vibration isolators (I had no reason to check them if they even exist there).

My crash bars came in and they mount with the six shorter engine mount bolts, two at the frame down tubes and one at the bottom cradle tube. I was able to use the original bolts and they are sturdy. Probably will add some highway pegs, thanks for the info that was posted.
