I use the individual foam air filters from JCW, the brand is Unifilter. Sometimes the metal ends start detaching from the foam. Superglue does the job of fixing that-some on the foam, some on the metal, dry in a couple of minutes.
I treat them with the pink oil like you should, PJ1 or other brands. I find that WD40 works great for cleaning them, though PJ1 sells a special cleaner. Spray inside and out, let sit a couple minutes, then hose out from the inside. I follow with dish soap and water, rinse and let dry, then put on new oil. Use WD40 on a paper towel to clean up the shiny metal ends.
The wet roads on my BI2K2 put a lot of grime on the bike, and this included the air filters. Denny said I was running rich, a little smoke, and I had already complained to Jeremy that I was running out of air at the higher elevations--only 3500 ft which isn't that high.
The filters were really clogged. Cleaned them, bike runs great but it needs a real test around Mt. Hood. Can do!
