If anyone has done the xs Chop wiring, could you send over or post a picture of what it looks like completed or some build photos? I'm hoping this is going to be what I need but I'd like to know before hand. Also, has anyone tried the chop wiring with a lithium battery? -
A larger copy of XS1100 Chop
For wiring a chop you may find a basic wiring diagram useful
Sorry its small, I can email it if full size.
Heres another basic wiring diagram but includes 2H9 style clocks

What he said
And the 3rd wire James mentions is earth, Black on these bikes. You may find more than 3 wires going to the headlight which will be the pilot light, that is wired separately so it comes on with the first click of the original lightswitch.
Again, they are not shown on the Chop wiring diagram as the twin headlights he wanted fitting didn't come with pilot lights.
On the twin headlights - don't bother!Leave a comment:

Re the headlamp, the dip switch sends current to one wire of the headlamp at a time. So, on dipped beam, one of the three wires to the headlamp will carry current. On full beam, it's the other wire. Both wires are never live at the same time.
The only time both wires are live is when the dipped beam is on and the the 'pass' switch (headlamp main beam flasher) pressed.Leave a comment:

Thanks!
Thank you for the response Tom, by any chance could you shed some light on the headlight question as well?

Yep you're right, its been pointed out by one of the NZ lads. My bad.
I wired the chop I was doing for a customer with none standard switches and used an earthing switch, the live goes to the solenoid direct from the battery, its not the best way as the solenoid/starter button is outside the ignition switch, in other words permanently live, if you press the button the starter will spin, the bike won't start with the key out but will spin over.
Simply add the extra wire in when using XS1100 switches.
I'll have to amend the diagram some time.Leave a comment:

Starter circuit
Hi, new to the forum and had a question about the xs1100 chop wiring diagram. I'm currently in the process of re-wiring my bike based on that diagram and so far so good except for 1 problem in the starter circuit. In the original harness and on the bike in reality there is an ignition switched hot lead to the starter solenoid and the the start button is a negative switch so it grounds the circuit and operates the starter when the button is depressed. In he chop diagram that positive ignition switched lead is missing from the diagram, how is that possible? I tried wiring it without the positive but nothing happens. But if I simply connect a lead coming off the ignition module that is switched live when the ignition is turned on everything operates properly. Is here something I'm missing? I'm a fan of minimalism and if that positive to the starter solenoid is not necessary I must be doing something wrong.
On a related note I have a headlight question, and please excuse my ignorance. With the high and lo beam switch is it a simple power to one or the other setup? I.e. When I click the high beam on is it powering both lead wires coming off the headlight or is it simply hi beam does one side (either green or yellow I can't remember) and lo beam does the other side? I ask because I got a basic switch which will work just fine but it came wired all weird (it's customizable) so I want to make sure I hook it up correctly.
Thanks in advance, seems like this is a great place to learn a lot about these bikes, I've used info on the forum for other repairs so I thought I would join.Leave a comment:

Ok TC I'll email the files to you.
I send the files out to folk all over the XS world so they can print them in any size, I have them in A3 and laminated, and one laminated A4 in the bottom of my tank bag.
I advised the chop owner against the twin headlights due to the charging circuit deficiencies but he wanted them, he's never been back complaining of a flat battery.
Here's the fixed link again Clicky. It has the more detailed diagram blown up, for some reason Photobucket wouldn't let me load the Chop diagram bigger, probably down to me being a numpty thoughLeave a comment:

I tried the enclosed link, but it didn't work. I've saved the bottom larger diagram, but would like to have a larger resolution copy of your first one here, plus a recent member is looking for the larger clearer version, could you email one to me at the forumadminxs11(at)hotmail.com address???
Thanks in Advance.

There's only a few wiring differences between the '78-79 standards and '80 bikes; location of the 'main' fuse and tail/running lights circuit power, how the tach gets it's signal from the alternator, and the addition of the 4-way flashers (one extra red/yellow wire off the ignition switch to the 4-way flasher, then brown/yellow from the flasher to the left handlebar control). All the rest of the colors are the same for a given function.Leave a comment:

I have a manual for a 78-79 but there are 3 wires on my bike that are not shown on the diagram, its a purple, blue and red wire, i figured out that the blue wire is for the running lights, but i am lost with the purple and red.Leave a comment:

There's only a few differences, for a overview look here: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35337. Wire colors are the same for all years...
What you need is the manual; find a post by member 'Catatonic Bug', he's got a link in his signature for free downloads of the various manuals. You'll need the individual circuit schematics in the unit repair section for clarity as the main diagram can be very confusing.Leave a comment:
