  • You win some, you lose some...

In the win column this month, I FINALLY got the timing chain tensioner to stop leaking oil! The root cause was I was running the Ventura automatic adjuster instead of the stock adjuster and the mounting "lugs" on this adjuster are a tad shorter than the stock one, so the screws were bottoming out in the holes just a fraction before the tensioner was torqued down correctly. A pair of washers behind the screws fixed this problem once and for all and the adjuster is now nice and dry.

The lose is because of a flat rear tire I picked up on the same day. I was riding across down to take my last final exam for the semester and was a little over half way there when I noticed the back of the bike start to feel a bit "loose". The worse it got, the slower I went until I was in the median going 20 mph. I rode like that the last 3 miles to UNM so I could take that exam.

Afterwards, I called a buddy up and invoked the "friends and family" rule and had him swing by my place to pick up my motorcycle ramp before heading over to pick me and my bike up. On inspection, the rear tire was pretty much at the wear indicators anyway, so I just placed an order for a new rear and tube (along with a summer jacket and gloves...) that should be here in a week or so. I called around before ordering the tires and found that a) local places where at LEAST 50% more expensive for a given tire, b) they STILL had to order it and c) mounting and balancing was the same no matter if I bought from them or not. That made my purchasing decision much easier.

Hopefully, all will be together and running well before summer school starts in June.
