I was looking at the half thrust bearing that Yamaha used and it just looks wrong to me. I added another bearing half to make a real thrust bearing and it fits perfectly but I don't see any wear indicators anywhere that would tell me which way, if any, to pry the crankshaft to align the bearing halves before torquing the case.
Power is tapped at the center of the crankshaft with the Hy-Vo primary chain and the engine is tranverse-mounted so the crank shouldn't be pulled predominantly to the left or right except when cornering. Maybe this is a bad idea and I'll smoke the crankshaft by making a full thrust bearing where Yamaha only used one half.
Maybe I could put a second thrust bearing half in the lower case but at main bearing saddle #2. It'll look wrong.
I still have plenty to do before I button up the cases so I'm going stick the dial indicator on it to re-check crankshaft end play and think about it for a while.
Regards,
Scott
