Has anyone ever figured out just exactly *what* is causing the dowel pin keeper to become bent in the first place?

This sure seems like a common problem.
Mine was bent out and away from the pin and also slightly counterclockwise. The only thing I can see that could do this is a clearance problem with the bottom of the pivoting gear that mates with the shift shaft. It *looks* like there is good clearance but could this be hitting the keeper and bending it up and away in a downshift?
Is this wear on that gear assembly? Engineering tolerance problem? Would a shim stop this?
-or-
Is the dowel pin driving the keeper out some how?
I sure would like to figure this out to see if it is related to some deeper problem with the tranny or not. I asked this follow-up question in another thread a few weeks ago but didn't get any bites...
Any thoughts on this?
BTW, thanks for the responses. I have learned more in this forum that anywhere else!
