I have few questions. I will try to make this as clear as possible. I took my gear shifting lever cover off to change the gasket. The pedal lever fell off without my noticing how the tension spring fits back on. Are the tension spring ends supposed to fit on either side of the stopper bolt or should the spring swing free? I can not figure out how exactly that is supposed to fit on (flat side of spring up or down?) My problem is that the shifting is not happening properly. (I can get it to shift, but I need to play with the pedal to get it in the right position. While riding the bike will shift up through a few gears and then get stuck unless I push the loose pedel back down a bit and then when I get it into higher gears it will down shift unless I pull up on the loose pedal a bit and then down.) Should I be able to go through the complete range of shifting, while sitting still without moving the wheel or is it normal to have to move the wheel to get it to shift? Is the pedal shift lever suppose to have some play? What I'm I doing wrong? Also can anyone tell me how that eccentric screw is supposed to effect the alignment of the shift drum and shift lever line marks. Adjusting that does not seem to effect anything. I have a Clymer Manual, but it is not quite comprehensive. Where can I get my hands on an actual shop manual for this 1981 XS1100SH. Can anyone out there give me some help me out or refer me to someone who could help. I live in central New Hampshire.
