  • 5th gear - neutral light weirdness

    OK, heres the thing:
The PO mostly busted the bottom part of my crankcase. And semi-fixed it.
I had 2 teeth missing from my 3rd gear, replaced the whole tranny.
Noticed that the shaft thingie that holds in the shift drum, is broken away with a piece of crankcase still attached. Well, cracked more like it. There was some crankcase holding it together at the top, so I used some cold welding goo to repair it. But I don't think it held, since the tranny got... weird. Anyway, since the shift drum cannot move any further right than it has to be, I changed the screw that holds the metal holding thingies on the left. I put in a longer screw, put in a nut to hold the metal thingies and left it out enough, to lean against the shifter cover on the left, so it holds the shift drum in place.
    Now the problem is:
The bikes jerks sometimes in 5th. I went for a night ride a few days ago, and this is what I came up with.
In 4th, the neutral light sometimes lights up.. but very dim and for a very short time. I noticed it only twice on a 20 mile ride. I was riding mostly in 4th, since the 5th is... weird....
So... in 5th... everything OK, then the neutral light comes on.. stays on for a sec., when it goes off, the bike jerks a bit. Any ideas?
I've pretty much had it with this tranny thingie, it had NEW 2nd gear in it when I started fixing the bike 3 years ago, and it ate 3rd gear up, 2nd gear dogs were worn (but no 2nd gear problem noticable), middle drive gears ate eachother to extinction,... crankcase crank bearings look like they had 50 years of abuse (after 2 years of mild riding, I put in new ones), top end is holding up pretty good tho... I had the cyls honed and put in new piston rings and valve oil seals. Replaced the camchain, primary chain and camchain tensioner. Set the valves too. Lately one valve is making itself heard tho... but not too much. Just lets me know its there.
I hope I will convince a guy I know to let me have his motor... for not too much cash
Anyway... I really gotta get me a 2nd bike and restore this one from scratch... from the frame up.
If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.
    (stole that one from I-dont-know-who)
Working...
