I just had the greatest ride, and met some of the nicest people, (no they aren't on Hondas, they're on XS11s!), and I want to relate it to my brothahs (and sistahs) of XS, but it will have to be in installments. The party is over, mundane reality calls, and I have but an hour at a time to type (slow, hunt and peck.)
I knew Diveray lived in my neck of the woods, but we had never met. One day about a week before the rally we met on Hwy 17 as we were cruising into Santa Cruz. I saw a bike in my mirror and I couldn't tell if it was a cop so I thought I should slow down to 70 just in case. As the mystery bike passes I look over and do a double-take as I recognize it as an XS 11! He does a double-take at me, and we both take the Hwy 1 South exit. We both get off at the next exit, and stopped to chat and introduce ourselves. 'twas there that Diveray told me about the planned Tahoe rally: I had gotten busy and hadn't visited the web site in a while. I had been thinking about taking a ride to Tahoe to write a travel story, but I envisioned a ride around the lake solo: what I got instead was infinitely better.
My bike (a "79 Special) was starting to run a little ragged, and Ray said he had a carb balancer, and that I should bring it by and he would help me check out my carbs. Long story short, the balance was OK, but he found some vacuum leaks which he fixed, which improved the performance substantially. We agreed to meet Friday morning in Scots Valley for breakfast and ride up to Tahoe together.
To be continued!
Next: The ride up.
