  • Nebraska Ride

We just got home yesterday. My 31 & 32 year old sons and I took a three day (700 mile) ride together. One son is in the Navy and is being transfered from Jacksonville, Florida to San Diego, he's back home for about a month. My other son works for Sprint and lives about 90 miles from here. So we took this long weekend to spend some time together.

We left St. Joe., Mo. about 9:00 A.M. Sat. and rode out US36 west across Kansas to US281 north into Neb. When we got as far as Hastings (about 6:00 P.M.) I had a rear tire go flat while turning around at about 2 mph. How's that for good luck, considering that about 10 minutes earlier I was running about 65mph in the rain?

My good luck continued when a local rode up on his 10 speed bike to see what kind of bike I was riding. I was on a friends '02 Triumph Bonneville America. I was riding this so my oldest son could ride my '80 Special. My other son was on a friends 750 Vulcan. It's great to have good friends. It turned out the local has an '03 just like it. This local called a buddy of his who had a trailer (Harley rider) and came over and loaded the Bonne' so we could haul it to a shop.

The guy with the trailer also called the service station (that closes at 6:00 P.M.) to ask the young guy running the gas pumps to stay until we could get there. The young kid stayed for about an hour and a half and let use his bosses jack, tools and tire changer so we could get going again. When I asked him what I owed him he said how 'bout 10 bucks, I gave him a twenty and thanked him over and over again. The other two guys wouldn't take anything from me, they wouldn't even let me buy 'em a beer.

They all really treated us great and turned a flat tire into a great experiance. ( They also liked the old Special )

We were able to get on to Grand Island and our motel and the rest of the weekend went just great although a little wet.

Sunday we on over to Minden to visit the Pioneer Village. Nice place to go, should have budgeted more time.

Monday (Labor Day) was sunny and beautiful, we rode back east on I 80 to Lincoln, then US 2 to I 29 and south to St. Joe. Needless to say we all had a wonderful time and are looking forward to the next trip.

P.S. If you're gonna break down do it in Hastings, Nebraska
