  • Road trip - Reno - by car

We completed our long weekend trip to Reno, arriving back in Colorado late Monday evening.

Trip went OK. However, we did have bad weather on Saturday, just when we wanted to drive around Lake Tahoe. Bummer. We went to Virginia City, Donner Pass, and the National Auto Museum. Below are a few photos:

The museum does have a small collection of motorcycles:

You can take your picture wearing a period hat and duster in one of the museum's Model T cars:

Trip to Donner Pass (on the old highway) was interesting, but we came back back on the interstate. Here we stopped at the rest area at the top of the "modern" Donner Pass:

4 - 6 inches of fresh snow overnight at this elevation.

All in all it was a good trip, even with the bad weather around the lake, and there is more to see if you have the time.

Gas prices ranged from a low of $2.939 in Salt Lake City to $3.559 in Lake Tahoe. Average was around $3.13 - $3.15. We put on around 1,800 miles for the trip. We stopped at Harrah's Casino in Reno and left with about as much as we entered with, so that was OK. Did not take in a show, nothing we really wanted to pay $80 - $100 to go see, but there were a few upcoming shows that would be interesting if one was in the area.

BTW, the "old" Donner Pass road is a short (maybe 10 miles?) detour off I-80 and would be a nice motorcycle ride. If you are in the area take time to ride the bypass. It parallels I-80 to the south and has some great views of Donner Lake.

Another road we were going to try but didn't due to the snow is Hwy 241 north of Lake Tahoe; it gets to 10K feet and the map shows a lot of twists and turns. If anyone has ridden this route please let me know if it is a worth-while trip.
