    Slime 12V 15A air compressor

I bought a new Slime air compressor at Walmart. It's bulkier and the packaging is cheaper than my original Slime air compressor but it has a pressure gauge so I decided to get one and try it out.

    Pictures:

I tested it at home and it ran for about ten seconds, then stopped.

    Oh, no!

I checked the 15A fuse in the 12V plug and it hadn't popped.

    Well, that was certainly annoying!

    Sun Electric / Sun Fuse
    Fuse: 6G-15A 250V (G)/(R)
    Fast Blow 15A 6x32 GLASS 6G

Time to open it up and see if it can be fixed!

The Red wire for the worklight LED had come off the circuit board so I soldered it back on.

While the compressor was open I cleaned off the factory grease and used some Krytox grease with moly.

The motor, gears and 'bearings', the cylinder, plastic piston and its o-ring all have Krytox now.

The pressure gauge fitting and the compressor check valve.

The pressure gauge has an adjuster screw.

Some grease and a pair of o-rings seal the pressure gauge and the case holds it in place in its plastic fitting.

I used a Q-Tip to apply the Krytox and I did remove the loose 'hairs'.

There's not much to go wrong with the compressor check valve, it's just a small rubber stopper with a spring.

The pressure gauge made a buzzing noise when the compressor ran so I shimmed it with the cardboard edge protector from a razor blade.

The compressor is back in its cheap zipper case and ready to go.
It's a noisy little thing and the unfiltered air inlets are on the bottom so don't set on the ground or it will inhale whatever its sitting on.

I have the bigger model with the lcd screen. It stopped working. I'll have to open it up, and see what's going-on.

Which compressor, Ian? There are a few of them with LCD screens.

I like my old Slime 40001 better than the 40020 but it's close enough to three times the price so I'm not getting another one.

The 40001 does have a metal piston but it also has a cheesy pencil-type pressure gauge instead of a built-in gauge and no worklight. It does have a better case and valve stem connector along with several different types of DC connector options for the SAE electrical plug on the compressor.

The 40020 can only use the cigarette lighter but nothing about the 40001 is worth the $20 price difference.

I have used and abused these for 15+ years now and are still going. A bit more expensive now, but still good.
the air gauge on top gets wrecked.. still runs and fills tires. Best for small tires, but I did fill a truck tire once. Takes a while, but it did it.

Had one of those about 5-6 years ago, the plastic gear that connects the motor to the compressor stripped out after two years. Needless to say I have a different brand these days
