A heads-up for others doing rebuild work. I was near to posting for help but kept digging till I discovered why the engine I was rebuilding would only spin a few degrees with a wrench on the square nut end.
Removed cams, nope, not valve interference. Removed starter, nope. Shifted into and out of neutral fine.
Answer was the clutch basket I'd reinstalled. I had not successfully engaged the gears behind it and the two were side to side instead of meshed. Basket still bolted up, just wasn't fully there.
So it's something to check if you hit the same symptom of a 'quasi-seized' engine. Cheers.
