I'm a little late to this after my initial reply, just been busy with other LIFE stuff, like my 6th COLONOSCOPY, found a couple of small polyps and had them removed, otherwise doing great, staying ahead of those things so I don't end up like Katy Couric's first husband!

Okay, reviewed my photos, WOW, hard to believe it's been 10 years since I did the 30th anniversary patches, but DUH, it's now the 40th! I'm sure you know Ralph, previous long time Xsive, he later lost his wife in a freak car collision under an overpass in the rain, but I digress. He had come up with a decent patch design, using the same silhouette image you have used, but also lettering and styling for the XS11 namesake that was different than the OEM official Yamaha type, possibly due to the limitations/restrictions of copyright laws, not totally sure. And I don't mean to dig up old wounds regarding that event of my patch vs. his, and apologize in advance right now. It's just that you wanted to see the other patches, and so that's what I'm trying to do along with providing the info and justification for my actions regarding the patch I came up with vs. the one Ralph had made.

But that's when and why I got involved afterwards, my rationale was due to the prestige that we hold the XS11 to, and that it was the FIRST year production, I felt a patch that showed the details of the bike a bit better would be more fitting it's heritage. This first image is from an OLD patch that was done may decades ago, and I don't know by whom, perhaps Yamaha itself, but you can see that the details just aren't that good.



SO, that's when I got a good photo image and then spent several hours converting it pixel by pixel from a PHOTO into a simple 8 color graphic image that could be more easily produced into a patch. Here's one of the various mockup layouts I had come up with.



But then after contacting the patch makers, learned that to get the fine details in the patch I was trying to attain, that instead of Embroidering the patch, we decided to have it WOVEN instead, which allowed for a much higher resolution to the bike image. This next image is what the final patch looked like, complete with silver thread for the chrome/shiny aluminum parts.



So...now you know, have seen these images, and my thoughts/views on the patch. I don't have a 78E, and so I wouldn't be wanting to purchase one, but looks like you've had quite a few offers already with your current design. It's your project so you can make then anyway you want. However, if you decide you might like the higher resolution color image, I would be happy to send you the files. YMMV

Don't know quite how to describe it, not a graphic artist, but I would start the "40th anniversary" line where it now ends and have the text read from left to right under the curve of the inner graphic.

I would also buy one or two, even if I just have an XJ...

still rotate the 40th anniversary and dates around so you can read it without doing a hand stand. Doing a great job though. Keep it up. Those of us who own E's appreciate your efforts!

"Yamaha" should be centered at 12 o'clock then rotate the years centered around ten o'clock and XS1100E appropriately spaced around two o'clock
