Only when I miss a shift racing it. Then it's "Ride it careful and listen for new ticks/knocks" for a bit. That's probably when I'm breaking the valve springs that I've found in a couple motors. There's not much useable HP after 8k and I think a 35 year old motor with a 40+ pound crank spinning 133 times per second is probably plenty.
I've had special mufflers on my XJ a couple times and both times, it choked the motor. I've had to drill some 1/2" holes in the end of the mufflers so it could breathe. Why? Basically the same motors? Has to be something in the cam timing I think. So apparently some of the motors like to be baffled up a bit to work well. I had some aftermarket mufflers on my Special that flowed really well.. and the bike was a dog compared to stock muffs.
So, a free flowing muffler isn't always good. Curious as to those that have gone to a Hardley muffler after stock and if they notice any difference. I'm sure losing the crossover isn't going to help things.Last edited by trbig; 03-08-2016, 08:10 AM.Leave a comment:

Go check the water in your battery................Please tell me you guy's are using a holesaw to remove the engine side baffles out of those sporty mufflers????
the sporty is a what? 4000-6000 RPM motor (not sure, it never had a tach)
(that all-way's feels like it's going to blow up, i can say that i own one :P )
the XS11 is a ?? 12,000-14,000 RPM motor.
you need a little more flow then a HD.
BUT, cops do check for baffles up in my area,
so please remove the engine side baffle in the muffler.
i used a 1 1/8" (29mm)hole saw mounted in a 2ft extention i made out of a piece of shaft.
cuts the coin out slick as can be and free's the beast up to breath.
doesn't make it noticeably louder.

The door is always open and the Yamaha light is on!
Although I don't drink much beer these days there is always a handful of beers in the fridge for when a friend stops in.
The wife and I loved our time at XSSE '15 and all the really great XS people we met there. Our door is ALWAYS open to any XS friend in the area or just passing through. We're only about 10 miles from I-85!

Sportster mufflers
I had biz down south of the ATL yesterday, so I dropped in on Kurt. I had a look at his bikes and drank all of his beer.
Pay no attention to the belly in the mirror! Kurt did a fantastic job of getting those mufflers wedded to the bike. They're married to standard headers. Very nice, indeed! It was a very nice visit as well.
I know, the photos are crap. You have to trust my opinion on this.
