Well, first of all... he wouldn't have purposely sold it, period.They loved that bike.
But, once the auction was over, and his bluff was called, he had no choice.

If he HAD ever decided to sell, never in his wildest dreams would he have imagined it would have brought that much... He figured $3500 TOPS, which is a pretty good price for a nice Maxim.

Bohn was saying he thought it would bring $4000 or more... hence the dare.

Funny thing was, there wasn't one bid placed until the last 60 seconds of the auction. He thought it was going to turn out like he figured... no one would bid, and no one would come close to meeting his $5000 set price...

He figured wrong, though. Those two rich, foreign guys that got into a bidding war at the bell showed him what he knew! Lol

my feeling is that if he really wanted to...he could have backed out of the sale...I know I would have...
Talk about hindsight...If he had known the bike would languish in a museum never to be ridden regularly again...I think he would not have sold it.....

I know of one former member who managed $8300 for his '82 XJ1100J Maxim on Ebay a while back.......

(and it was worth every penny, too!)

Of all the XS lineage...to me the XJ1100 maxim is the most beautiful...the lines ..well. I was struck by it the first time I saw one in the dealer's showroom way back in '83 and it still holds true today...I wonder if 30 yrs of owning my Maxim has anything to do with that bias....nah...

I do miss his input here...and it was still north of $12k He had that fella at Stillwater Kawasaki that was running those race cars with XS and FJ engines in them...so the guy definitely knew how to tune for maximum performance from those engines...I can see why Cody went to him...He definitely took that XJ to another level...at one point when it was up forsale I breifly entertained the notion of buying for what I thought would end up at $5000...at that time I had the money and I did want it...who wouldnt??? So now it times for an obligatory nod to MAXIMAN and his bike "Zilla...for there are those here whom have yet to see this illustrious machine...I shall endeavor to find a photo...

Yeah Bob I recall...Cody told me what he actually spent on that bike and the $8300 ebay sale didnt even come close to covering it...invariably one never gets back what they put into it...but damn I agree it was and is sad... that bike prolly wont ever be ridden again...

Oh yeah... It was somewhere around 12 grand.

But he told me he didn't do all that to that bike thinking he would get it back or raise it's value. It was his personal experiment. He wanted to see just how much untapped potential was actually in the XS11 engine that Yamaha had left on the table. He tried every exhaust setup, carb trick, engine parts combination imaginable. He had a lot of fun learning as he tried and tested all that.

I was fortunate enough to be good friends with him, and he shared a lot of his findings with me for my Maxim.

He shared and documented a LOT of his findings here, too.

I recall the bike you rode to XSEast 2009 Vermont and I believe I saw it in VA too..your bikes are always pristine and original...always quite admirable...

yeah I still have some good pics of 'Zilla... BTW the trend here in the states has been going upwards in value...especially in the past year...Its nice to see as an owner... for buyers not so good...

Yeah, Ben... that's the one.
Last I heard, it was bought by a wealthy foreign collector.
When the truck arrived to greet him with the bike, and the guys unloaded it and presented it to him, he loved it... and then started insisting one of the guys ride it down the street while he watched. He would not ride it. So, the truck driver climbed on, fired it up, and rode it down the street and back.
The collector was thrilled, and ordered them to then take it inside his museum and position it on a display.
That's the last I've heard about that "awesome, one-of-a-kind" Maxim.
Kind of bittersweet.

And to think, it all started by Bohn betting Cody that it would bring 3-4 thousand if Cody put it up on Ebay.

It got to Cody's curiousity, so he did... never thinking it would sell, and never dreaming a bidding war between 2 people would ensue. Even when the check arrived and he went to the bank, he figured it was rubber. It wasn't!
He said he didn't know which was harder... breaking the news that he had sold it to his wife (she loved it as much as he did...) or watching the men load it on the truck to take it away forever.
