I opted for a cd/mp3 player with am/fm/tv/weather bands over the minidisc player. cost was less than half, plus mp3 cds are compatible with my car stereo.
anyway, atrac seems to be sony's answer to mp3.
Atrac3plus pros/cons
pros:
1: i was able to fit 30 full albums (364 songs) onto one 700mb cdr.
2: i would compare sound quality to a 128 kbps mp3
3: at least with my cd player, folder navigation is simple
cons:
1: takes a LONG time to compress the audio files.
2: it doesn't seem like you can read the atrac files from a computer once they're burned to a cd. Instead of just files - it uses some kind of file structure. I suppose you could copy the entire cd, but it doesn't seem like you could give the cd to a friend for them to pick and choose songs off of it. I'm sure this was intentional.
I'm waiting for someone to come out with a portable cd player that will read mp3s burned to a dvd-r.
