I want to do this right and not rush it. I have half the valves and valve seals out. A few questions on proper cleaning. I plan on submerging the head in a hot bath of Simple Green:

1. Mating surface: The head mating surface has some gasket material baked into it. After soaking, can I use a brass brush to remove it, or a gasket scraper only?
2. Cylinder bowls: Brass brush okay to remove carbon?
3. Valve stems: I read to NOT use any brushes, etc. on valve stems. No brass brush to remove carbon?
4. Valve guides: Can I use a brass wire pipe cleaner?

I'm going to nab a cylinder head off one of my spares. I'll ensure it's clean, but I'm debating on pulling the valves and replacing the valve stem seals. Any thoughts on whether this is necessary?

I'm also contemplating going one step further and pulling the cylinders and checking tbe rings, and possibly rehoning the cylinders.

Thoughts?

Going down to Ohio tomorrow to grab (2) more 78E's. Combined with my other XS parts bikes, they'll make two running bikes. But I'll be stealing the head off one and throwing it on my yellow XS to keep it moving.

Long-term, they'll all be running. Truly great bikes.

I have looked through the maintenance section and can't seem to find an answer.

The forks needed new seals so I took the front end part, replaced the seals, oil etc and put it back together. I tie wrapped a block of wood between the grip and break lever to stop accidental operation. It all went back together ok, with one exception. The discs and pads are squeaking when riding but it goes away when braking. It didn't do it before I took the wheel out. The wheel wasn't laid down or dropped, it is in the correct way round. I didn't remove the disks. The pads were not swapped. I wiped the disks with IMS , before reassembly.
I am at a loss, any suggestions.

Thanks
