Picked up a bike from my BIL on the way home from Santa Cruz, CA. He bought it ten years ago when he decided to start "riding a motorcycle" at 60 years old. Rode it for about four months and parked it.
It's a 1980 GS850G shaft drive with a Vetter fairing. Still on the trailer, but I'll try and work on it so I can flip it to help pay for the '78 I'm working on. 18K miles on the odometer, and not too bad other than the top of the tank is down to metal and surface rust.
I'll post pics once I do a little more to figure out what it will need to run.

I want to do this right and not rush it. I have half the valves and valve seals out. A few questions on proper cleaning. I plan on submerging the head in a hot bath of Simple Green:

1. Mating surface: The head mating surface has some gasket material baked into it. After soaking, can I use a brass brush to remove it, or a gasket scraper only?
2. Cylinder bowls: Brass brush okay to remove carbon?
3. Valve stems: I read to NOT use any brushes, etc. on valve stems. No brass brush to remove carbon?
4. Valve guides: Can I use a brass wire pipe cleaner?

Local motorcycle repair shop had a number of bikes dropped off this summer by folks that just didn't want them anymore. No titles otherwise they probably would have sold them.

Owner is a nice guy and friend. So, brought home an orphan 1983 Nighthawk 550 that had sat for the last 20 years. Finally got it road worthy in terms of mechanicals. Still needs to have new turn signals put on it and tires.

Hydraulic valve adjusters so it won't have a tight valve like the Seca 750 ended up with, lol.

Single front brake caliper needed rebuilding, clutch slave cylinder and carbs needed unracking and cleaning as well. Everything went back together like it should and it runs great. However, appearance-wise it looks like it just came out of a dumpster.

The issue that has reared its head now that I've been riding it around a little in the neighborhood, the charging system is not charging the battery. It cranked weak last night when I was going to take it for a ride so charged the battery overnight. Battery checks out fine. 12.7 volts sitting, 12.7 volts with the engine running and raising the rpm. No bueno.

Time to bug out the charging system, my thought is check the connections first, the bike sat 20 years, then rectifier, stators are typically not issues, even after sitting a long time. So the journey continues on a different bike now.

I'm also contemplating going one step further and pulling the cylinders and checking tbe rings, and possibly rehoning the cylinders.
Thoughts?

See the banner at the top of the site:

Forums will be upgraded, treat site as read-only.
The forums have been getting attacked by bad actors. They are taking advantage of issues in older versions of VBulletin. Sorry for the site going up and down over the last few days. Upgrading to a newer version has so far been unsuccessful and we are working with Vbulletin support to resolve the issue.
Until that upgrade is complete, the forum remains operational but website itself has been made read-only. You are welcome to publish new posts are replies but know that we may need to restore to a earlier backup so any new content would be lost. We have unfortunately already had to restore from a backup already.
I will remove this notice once the upgrade is complete and the risk of losing new posts is gone. Sorry for the headache. While we may lose a few days of content, we will keep all the other decades of content available.

Unfortunately, Yamaha never made a 6-Cylinder.

When I was a teenager, I took the liberty of sitting on a new CBX in the showroom of my local Honda dealer. I was IN LOVE!!! Unfortunately, my seated position on that bike was extremely short-lived. The showroom manager very quickly dislodged me from the bike! Obviously, a young skinny 16-17 year old was not capable of purchasing such a machine. The manager knew it and so did I. I swore that SOMEDAY I would own one of these beautiful machines. Forty years later..... I FINALLY OWN ONE!

I must say that I am impressed at the starter cranking speed using one of these batteries. It cranks like it's on steroids. It was 13.2V right out of the box and that's where it stays. It's a totally sealed unit, so no vent. It is great for clearing the air box when it floods with fuel vapors on a hot day.
I have it paired with a geezer VR so I'm hoping it charges at a high enough rate. So far it's a great upgrade, but we'll see what happens over time. The cost was less than $60 on Amazon and had it the next day.
