Accidental XS1100 Horse Conversion

My 1979 XS1100 special gallops like an old horse. I have no idea why, I’ve tried everything, and nothing changes. Mid throttle (or really any level of throttle) surges and lags and ridiculously jolts forward when I try to accelerate. It clunks and bounces, and feels like constantly about to stall. It also won’t idle unless I’m on the throttle. It somehow seems to be running both rich and lean at the same time.

It all started when I took my project out for the first time and it was idling high. Messed with the mixture screw, nothing happened. Figured it was lean so I ordered bigger jets. 45 and 147.5. Now before you make comments on the jets (which I’d still highly appreciate feedback on), the problem started before I even installed them. While waiting on them to arrive I took the bike out again and it started doing this weird galloping, which was a huge change from the loud high revving lean it was doing the few days prior. When the new jets arrived, I installed them, and nothing changed whatsoever, which was highly concerning seeing as they’re a few sizes over stock. The same exact unridable surging and jolting and weakness. After that I realized something was seriously wrong or broken. I checked my slide diaphragms, slightly cracked, so I replaced them. No change. Blew compressed air through all passages. No change. Break cleaner test for vacuum leak. No change. All 4 spark plugs are sparking, but fouling quickly. I adjusted the needle, no change. One of the T connectors is leaking fuel, so I ordered another and am waiting on it, but it doesn’t seem like that would cause such extreme symptoms.

It feels and sounds like I’m riding a V-twin. Not even actually, more like a V-step siblings, because none of the cylinders seem to be related in any way besides being stuck in the same engine block. I’m extra confused because it started happening without me changing anything. I feel like I’m losing my mind and i just cannot figure out what’s going on. Any advice is welcome and thanks for reading my rant.

I just want to show you my new toy in a proper new topic instead of highjacking someone's post about clunky shaft drives. In time i got kinda bored of riding my 2015 Yamaha Tracer 900 (FJ900 in the USA if I'm not mistaken). I wanted another big V-twin because of the fabulous torque. Like my hooligan 2006 Moto Morini Corsaro 1000 that regretfullyI sold in 2015 :

So during our riding holidays in southern Spain I rented the sexy Moto Guzzi V100 Mandela for a week. That didn't work out because of shoulder, back and neck pain and after two days I decided to swap with the V100 Stelvio which is higher, more off road orientated. When I picked it up it had just done about 100 miles. We started riding on the highway to get to the twisty roads and I noticed a whining sound from behind and we stopped at the first gas station. So I recorded the sound (it came from the clutch / shaft drive area) and sent it to the rental company. And they called me saying to swap the bike with their 1 year old R 1250 GS if I wanted, which I did. Last time I rode a Beemer was a R 100 RS in the early eighties which I got rid of after one week because the cylinders hit the tarmac every third corner. But I loved that GS although it was too high and top heavy for a daily ride. The engine and handling felt sublime. And after reading about the technical side and lots of reviews I came upon this one:

A 2023 R 1250 R:

Well... for me this is the ultimate bike, it is damn quick, has fantastic torque and handles like a dream. So Ray read that and this was his response:

"I only hope BMW got their act together! My 2007 R1200RT needed the final drive replaced at 68K miles, and I'd already bypassed the side stand switch. Oh, and that didn't include the engine rear main seal that went at 24K miles and took out the clutch..... My first and last BMW product."

Well Ray.. I hope that too but the Rental Service told me their Beemer 1250 GS's do around 100-110k miles before they sell them to a Rental Service in Poland for a second life. And of course stuff breaks now and then and the final drive is different now but still not entirely bullet proof but I will never do that many miles on mine. Mileage now is approx. 5k miles and it had the 5 year factory warranty so I can sleep well at night But thanks for your concern.

And then their was LAB3's remark hahahaha:

"Are you allowed to talk to us? I'd hate to see you void your warranty..."

Yes no problem. I only know 1 other Beemer rider and he is one my friends who join us on our holidays. And they all love are XS1100's !

Then there's basic maintenance, in this case change the spark plugs, clip a little off the spark plug wires to get good contact with the cap, lube the Speedo and throttle cables and figure why the coolant tank drains and doesn't refill.
I'll let the picture do the talking, thanks to Wendell at Smitty's Motorcycle Lodge in Tellico Plains Tennessee for giving me a spot to do this, what a PITA!

JASO oil vs energy conserving

Tried posting this in the members Lounge but it has a pink background and says unapproved. Not sure what's going on? Going to give it a try here.

I spend a good bit of time over on "Bob is the oil guy" forum. Discussions about JASO MA/MA2 oil rating going on at any given time.

I'm looking for info/experience back in 1997/1998 when energy conserving became a label on bottles in 1997 then JASO was established in 1998.

My question is this: Even though oils above 10w30 grade are not rated energy conserving simply because the higher viscosity discounts them from an engine efficiency standpoint, has anyone experienced issues with clutch slippage during the 1997/1998 time frame or after, running "Automotive" 10w40, 15w40, 20w50 Etc in any bike not just a Yamaha XS1100?

My contention is if it doesn't have "energy conserving" on the bottle, there's no magic pixie dust that is a friction modifier other than traditional additives such as boron, moly and zinc.

Over on BITOG, guys are adamant about friction modifiers that somehow make a difference, yet no one can identify them and the potential to be in oils that are not labeled as energy conserving. However I've never had an issue myself and I'm trying to get some real world experience from others besides myself that I can share back on that forum.

The weather up here in The Great White North has been less than conducive this year to exercising my XS up until now. I was able to get around to getting something done that I ran out of weather to do last fall. Parked her last year with just under 100k km and was only able to flip the odometer today. Yes, yes I know that's only 62k miles but I still regard it as personal accomplishment. Bought new, it's taken 46 years (19 of which under a tarp in the garage) as me being the only butt on the rider's seat. A little disappointed that it didn't magically morph back to a brand-new bike but It still pulls like a train, starts with one push on the button and makes me smile. Thanks again to all contributing forum members for your guidance in bringing this Phoenix back from the ashes. As long as I'm still upright, breathing and physically capable, this love affair will go on. Keep the rubber side down!
